About EntireoPathic Medicine™

Medicine for the Entire Human Being™

EntireoPathic Medicine™ is defined as a comprehensive, person-centered, and evidence-informed framework for understanding health, illness, prevention, treatment, recovery, function, quality of life, and human well-being.

Founded by Daniel Shane Sheibani Davidson, in 1996, now a retired physician and surgeon, EntireoPathic Medicine™ begins with a fundamental premise:

Human health is multidimensional.

Disease may involve biological mechanisms, but the course and experience of illness may also be influenced by psychological, behavioral, social, environmental, cultural, functional, economic, spiritual, and existential factors.

These influences do not necessarily operate independently.

They interact.

EntireoPathic Medicine™ therefore seeks to examine the entire constellation of factors relevant to the individual patient.

Our Mission

Our mission is to advance a scientifically responsible model of whole-person healthcare that combines rigorous biomedical medicine with a broader understanding of the factors affecting human health.

We seek to advance:

* prevention
* early identification of disease
* evidence-based treatment
* interdisciplinary collaboration
* patient education
* shared decision-making
* behavioral health
* psychological well-being
* healthy lifestyle interventions
* functional independence
* social support
* environmental health
* spiritual and existential understanding when relevant to the patient
* rehabilitation
* chronic disease management
* healthy aging
* compassionate care
* research
* healthcare education
* improved quality of life

Our Vision

We envision healthcare in which every patient is understood not merely as a diagnosis, but as a complete human being.

We envision clinicians who ask not only:

“What disease does this patient have?” but also:

“What combination of biological, psychological, behavioral, social, environmental and personal factors may be contributing to this patient’s health?” And:

“What can we responsibly change?”

The Entireopathic Dimensions of Health

The EntireoPathic framework may consider multiple dimensions when clinically relevant.

Physical Health

Emotional

Emotional experiences, relationships, grief, fear, loneliness, anger, attachment, resilience and emotional regulation.

Psychological Health

Psychological

Mood, cognition, trauma, anxiety, depression, coping mechanisms, personality, perception and psychological stress.

Social Health

Social

Family relationships, social networks, isolation, caregiving, community, housing, education and access to healthcare.

Cultural

Language, traditions, health beliefs, family structures and cultural understandings of illness and healing.

Lifestyle Medicine

Economic

Financial stability, employment, insurance, medication affordability, transportation and access to nutritious food and healthcare.

Environmental Health

Functional

Mobility, activities of daily living, cognition, independence, physical capacity and ability to participate in meaningful life activities.

Spiritual

Meaning, purpose, faith, belief, values, connection and spiritual practices when important to the patient.

Existential

Identity, mortality, suffering, purpose, personal meaning and the individual’s relationship with illness and life.

PsychoSpiritual Health

Behavioral

Nutrition, exercise, tobacco exposure, alcohol and substance use, adherence, sleep habits, health-seeking behavior and other lifestyle patterns.

Biological

Genetics, physiology, anatomy, pathology, pathophysiology, immunology, endocrinology, metabolism, microbiology and other biomedical mechanisms.

Environmental

Air quality, water, occupational exposure, climate, toxins, housing conditions, neighborhood characteristics and other environmental influences.

Healthcare-System Factors

Access, continuity, coordination, communication, medication burden, fragmented care, health literacy and transitions between healthcare settings.

What Entireopathic Medicine is Not

Scientific clarity is essential.

EntireoPathic Medicine™ is not intended to replace conventional medical care.

It is not a substitute for:

* emergency medicine
* surgery
* oncology
* cardiology
* infectious-disease treatment
* psychiatry
* appropriate pharmaceutical therapy
* diagnostic testing
* evidence-based specialty care
* hospitalization when necessary

Instead, EntireoPathic Medicine™ asks how these essential disciplines can function within a broader understanding of the person.

Our Core Principles

Treat the person, not merely the diagnosis.

Search for contributing causes whenever possible.

Prevent disease whenever possible.

Use evidence responsibly.

Recognize interactions among body, mind, behavior and environment.

Respect patient autonomy.

Coordinate fragmented healthcare.

Measure outcomes.

Continue learning.

Never allow technology to eliminate humanity from medicine.

Patient-centered And Evidence-informed

Every clinical intervention should be evaluated according to evidence, benefits, risks, contraindications, individual circumstances and patient preferences.

The word holistic should never mean scientifically uncritical.

Whole-person medicine must remain accountable to evidence.

EntireoPathic Medicine™ therefore supports rigorous research and critical evaluation of therapeutic claims.

Our Commitment

EntireoPathic Medicine™ represents an evolving intellectual and clinical framework.

We welcome scientific inquiry.

  • We welcome debate.
  • We welcome research.
  • We welcome collaboration.

We welcome physicians, nurses, scientists, psychologists, therapists, pharmacists, public-health professionals, educators, patients, and scholars from around the world.

Because understanding the entire human being requires the contributions of many disciplines.
